When purchasing a new home, one of the biggest concerns the owners have is the appearance of the house. Frequently a lot of money is spent on making the interior of the home attractive. The owners paint, wallpaper and decorate the walls. They purchase mirrors, picture frames and other items to make the home somewhere they are proud to live in. Many think about the landscaping for their home, but put that decision aside planning on waiting until they can afford it. Others develop grand plans for the landscaping and then eventually realize they can’t afford those plans or that they cannot maintain the landscaping of the yard.

One of the biggest considerations families fail to consider when choosing their landscape is functionality. Yes, having a lot of large trees with pretty leaves looks nice throughout most of the year. In the fall though, that can produce a lot of work, when they have to spend hours each weekend raking all of those leaves. Also, don’t forget when planting those trees that their roots will dig into the ground. Be sure to plant the trees away from water pipes, otherwise the homeowners will find that their decorative trees are going to cost them thousands of dollars in plumbing repairs and they might have to remove those trees as well.

When preparing the landscaping of a home, think about the use of the yard. If a family has a lot of children, those kids are going to need an area to play in. The yard keeps them somewhere their parents can keep an eye on them. When landscaping, be sure to keep an area open for the children to play in. After all, if the kids want to play baseball or football in the backyard, the last thing they are going to want is a tree in the middle of the football or baseball field. Don’t landscape the yard, only to have to redo it completely in a few years. Plan ahead for future ideas such as additions to the home or installing a pool in the backyard. Preparing ahead of time will eliminate the need to remove landscaping to add these new features to your backyard.

Landscaping can add value to a home. It makes it more attractive to potential buyers of your house for sale or renters for your house for rent. Poor planning can reduce the value of your home though. Nobody is going to want to buy a home when the first thing they think of when looking at the house is, “As soon as we buy that we will have to remove those ugly bushes”.
